Bio

Edith Cernik John, 88, of Lincoln, Nebraska formerly of Ord, Nebraska died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, at Bryan LGH West Medical Center in Lincoln. Edith was born Nov. 25, 1922, on the family farm in the Geranium Township of Valley County west of Ord, Nebraska to Joseph and Phyllis Lukesh Cernik. Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Emil John. Survivors are: sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Karin of Omaha and Gerald and Linda of Lincoln; three grandsons and two great-grandchildren. Edith attended rural school and graduated from Ord High School, Ord, Nebraska in 1940. On Aug. 2, 1945 Edith was united in marriage to Emil John at Grand Island, Nebraska Following Emil's discharge from the Army, the couple settled in Ord. In 1954, they began a jewelry store and in 1958, they purchased Auble's Jewelry store. They owned and operated John Jewelry until retirement in 1979. Emil passed away Feb. 24, 1992. Edith continued to make her home in Ord until December of 2003, when she moved to Lincoln to be closer to her family. Emil was a member of the Ord First United Methodist Church and the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading, needlework, word puzzles, cooking and being with her family. Edith was also preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Eldon and Frank Cernik. Burial was in the Ord City Cemetery, Ord, NE. Published in The Grand Island Independent on August 17, 2011
