The Anthon Herald, 27 May 1936, page 1: Typhoid Fever Fatal to Sophia Bernard. News of the death of Miss Sophia Bernard, a resident of the Anthon community for more than 56 years, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Sioux City on Friday evening, May 22, 1936, at 10 o'clock came as a great shock to her many friends who did not realize that her condition was so serious. Although Miss Bernard had suffered several months with a severe cold, she did not become bedfast until two weeks ago when typhoid fever developed. Complications set in early Friday morning and she was rushed to the hospital. Her condition became critical that day and she passed away at 10 o'clock that evening at the age of 56 years, 6 months and 7 days. Born November 15, 1879, to Joseph and Martha Bernard on a farm in Wolf Creek Township now occupied by her brother James, the deceased lived in the Anthon vicinity her entire life. She moved to town in 1909 and kept house for her father until his death in 1918. Since then she had made her home in Anthon. A devout Catholic, she was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Anthon. She was an ardent worker for church causes, being chairman of one of the four circles at the time of her death. Survivors include two brothers, Henry and James Bernard of Anthon; two sisters, Mrs. P.N. LaDoux of Indianola, Nebraska, and Mrs. Margaret Coyle of Woodbine, Iowa; twenty-six nieces and nephews, thirty-one great nieces and nephews and a legion of friends. Funeral services were conducted at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church by Rev. D.K. Hurley with burial in Mt. St. Joseph's Cemetery, Anthon. Pallbearers were Frank Galvin, Roy Thompson, Frank Carr, Martin Neustrom, Dan Curtin and V.M. Franks. Hudgel's Funeral Service had charge of arrangements.
