Hazel L. Brooks Corder COEBURN, Va. Mrs. Plez (Hazel L. Brooks) Corder passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at Mountain View Regional Medical Center after a long period of declining health. She was 87. The visitation and service for Mrs. Corder's family and friends in Virginia will be held Thursday, April 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Estes Funeral Home in Coeburn, followed by a graveside service at Gilmore Memorial Park in Julian, N.C., on Friday, April 2, at 3 p.m. A native of Wise County, Va., Hazel was born on March 9, 1923, the second child of Claude and Esther (Lawson) Brooks of Dry Fork. After working as a "Rosie the Riveter" for Cadillac Motors in Detroit during World War II, Hazel returned to southwestern Virginia and married Plez K. Corder. Plez and Hazel moved their family between Virginia, California, Ohio, and North Carolina, but returned home to Wise County in 1982. Hazel's long and active life was defined by her devotion to her faith, friends and family. She is survived by a brother; three sisters; three daughters, Candace Henderson of Gibsonville, N.C., Jill Prevette of Randleman, N.C., and Susan Vollmuth of Lake Barringon, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren who will hold her memory dear to their hearts in years to come. The family would like to thank the staff at Mountain View Regional Medical Center's long term care unit for their kindness to Hazel during the final years of her life. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America. Estes Funeral Home, Coeburn, is in charge of arrangements.
