Ruth N. Thornton, 91, a resident of Wheatland, Wyoming died Sunday, July 24, 2011 at the Platte County Memorial Hospital in Wheatland. Ruth was born March 11, 1920 in Valentine, Nebraska the daughter of Ray and Gladys (Jackson) Brown. She was raised and educated in the Crookston, Nebraska. Ruth married Virgil Thornton on April 15, 1937 in Pierre, South Dakota. They lived in Ainsworth for many years. Ruth enjoyed working at the Brown County Memorial Hospital, where she was employed for over 25 years. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was very proud of her many beautiful flower beds and won a "Yard of the Week" award. After the passing of her husband, Ruth moved to Wheatland to be with her daughter, Virginia Lower, and her family, Larry, Annette, Garrett, and Amanda Lower of Alliance, Nebraska, Mark, Vickie, Aure, Corey, and Sydney Rizzi of Casper, Wyoming, and Cassy Lower, Kori, Michaela, and Matthew Wilhelm of Wheatland. Ruth is also survived by her daughters, Barbara Kriz of Hemingford, Nebraska and Iodine (Jim) Lurz of Ainsworth; her son, Larry (Jan) Thornton of Randall, Kansas; grandchildren, Cindy Davies, Kathy McGowan, Terry Cullen, John Kriz, Tim Kriz, Laura Lurz, James "Bub" Lurz, Chad Lurz, Mike Lurz, and Tony Thornton; two sisters, Valda Stach and Helen Thompson; sister-in-law, Darlene Thornton; nieces; nephews; cousins; and a host of friends. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and four brothers.
