Bio

Taken from the Hancock Project Book Chart #9) George (Hancock) was a Unitarian Minister, the First Unitarian Church was in Boston, MA. His parents moved to Vermont in 1800. George was 18 years of age when his father died. He then moved with his mother to Orleans Co. NY in 1819. Married 17 Nov 1824 to Caroline Gates, daughter of Jeremiah Gates and Sarah Southworth, whose father was Isaac Southworth, Caroline born 8 Dec 1806 Washington Co. NY and moved to Wayne Co. Michigan in 1835 died 1882 was 75 years old died of cancer, her father was a shoemaker. (Taken from Mildred Henschel) Hancock, George, farmer Box 33; PO Brush Creek; born in Worcester Co. MA. 5 Sep 1797; in 1800 his parents moved to Vermont, and in 1804 they moved to another county in the same state; in 1806, they moved to Washington Co. NY and in 1815 he emigrated to the West. During his absence his father died and he again returned in 1818. In 1819 he moved with his mother to Holland Purchase, Orleans Co. NY, where he married Caroline Gates 17 Nov 1824; she was born in Washington Co. NY 8 Dec 1806. In 1835 they moved to Wayne Co. Michigan where they remained until 1849, then emigrated to Kendell, Co. ILL in 1850 and in the same year to Jones Co. Iowa. In 1852 they moved to this county, where they still remain. Sarah (Jane), John & Martha are the names of their living children. (taken from Fayette Co. Iowa Album pub 1878 Fairfield Twps) Brush Creek Early Business: Shambaugh was acting as banker and George Hancock appeared on the list of surnames of his customers. Luxuries were few. Candy was seldom sold, but a lot of chewing tobacco was; George Hancock's name appeared among those who charged their chewing tobacco. Shambaugh bought a stick of timer for a sill from George Hancock for $1.00. George Hancock mended his shoe for 50 cents. Groat Cemetery, this cemetery is sometimes called the Arlington Cemetery and has been called the Brush Creek Cemetery. It is located in Section 32 of Fairfield Twsp. I George Hancock of the township of Fairfield , Fayette Co. state of Iowa of the age of 78 years being of sound mind do make publish and declare this my last will and testament in the manner following that is to say. I give and bequeath to my wife Caroline Hancock all my property both real and personal. The Realty is location on and being the North East 1/4 of the North West quarter of Section 33, Township 92 North of Range 7 West of the fifth principal Meridan also the South 4/10 of the East 1/4 of the South East 1/4 of the South West ___ of Section 16 Township 92 North Range 7 West of the 5th PM that my said wife shall have possession of said property in fee simple without any administration on said property in any manner whatever, by her paying my just debts that I may owe at the time of my demise, and shall have all rights in the same as though it was conveyed to her by Warantee Deed.
