Bio

Suggested edit: On Friday, July 8, 2022,a gravestone will be placed in Groat/Arlington Cemetery for Caroline Marie (Gates) Lickiss (1806-1882), wife of George Milford Hancock (1797-1878). (Caroline Marie and George were parents of Sarah Jane Hancock, Percy Lickiss' mother.) George Hancock is buried in beautiful Groat Pioneer Cemetery, one mile west and one mile south of Arlington, Iowa. A headstone clearly marks his grave, but there is nothing for his wife, Caroline. Plans are to change this by placing a gravestone in Groat/Arlington Cemetery near her husband… On October 15, 2021, Alice Miller, Arlington, IA resident and member of governing board for Groat Pioneer Cemetery, discovered by dowsing that there were two occupied spaces in the "Hancock Lot" south of George Hancock. She joins Tom Stoeber to believe that one of these spaces is occupied by Caroline Marie Gates (1806-1882), who's obituary and Certification of Death say she is buried in Groat/Arlington Cemetery, but without a tombstone… Like many of the Lickiss family members, Caroline Marie was an outstanding wife, mother, and friend to all in Arlington! It is a well proven fact that Caroline Marie GATES was the 7th great granddaughter of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, famous passengers on the Mayflower! She then might be one of the most famous persons buried in Groat Pioneer Cemetery, and didn't even have a gravestone…until the "Potter sisters" took matters into their own hands! On Friday, July 8, 2022, the "Potter sisters" were joined by 4 generations of ancestors of "Sweet Caroline" Marie (Gates) Hancock to place a special wreath at the foot of her newly fashioned gravestone on the 140th anniversary of her death!! The new gravestone was constructed by Tom Stoeber and the "Potter sisters" of solid concrete and included the pictured plaque that does honor to her historical significance. As you can see, a bronze medallion is centered near the base of the gravestone recognizing Caroline…and her famous 7th great grandparents! A year later her health being very poor, she went to live with J. W. Lickliss, that she might receive the tender care of a loving daughter. She was the mother of seven children, Samuel, Sarah Jane, Lucy, Harriet, Adelbert, John & Martha. Samuel and Adelbert died in the army during the rebellion. Lucy died in Jones Co. and Harriet at this place. The surviving children are Mrs. J. W. Lickiss, of this place, John C Hancock of Chicago IL and Mrs. James Crosby of Epwerth IA. (Taken from 14 Jul 1882 Brush Creek News) Caroline purchased the first yard of cloth ever retailed in Brush Creek. (taken from Portrait and Biographical Album of Fayette City, IA pa 279 write up was on John W & Sarah Lickiss) Carolyn applied for pension from Adelbert's Civil War Service under Mother's or Father's Declaration of Pension Jan 1871.
