Bio

Clarence Hollingsworth of Greenville, cotton planter and gin owner and former mayor of Hollandale, died at 12:55 p.m. Saturday in King's Daughters Hospital after an illness of one month. He was 77. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church by the pastor, Dr. Perry Claxton. Burial will be in Greenville Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home is in charge. Mr. Hollingsworth was the father of C. A. Hollingsworth, chief of the Greenville Police Department. Born on his father's plantation on Deer Creek, near Percy, a son of Col. Joseph Hollingsworth and Nancy Cannon Hollingsworth, pioneer settlers of the Delta, he lived his entire life in Washington county. He received his early education in Washington county schools and attended Mississippi College at Clinton. For many years he was manager of the L. C. Hays plantation, one of the Delta's largest planting properties, and made his home at Hollandale. He served as mayor of Hollandale about 30 years ago and also as a member of the board of aldermen of the Washington county town. He was a member of the Hollandale Masonic Lodge ... and an honorary member of the Hollandale chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. He married Mae McGraw on January 3, 1900, at Centreville, Miss. Mrs. Hollingsworth died May 10, 1954. Six years ago he moved to Greenville from Hollandale to make his home at 350 Fairview Avenue. At the time of his death he was owner and operator of the Wayside Gin. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greenville. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Marie Glasco of Greenville; three sons, G. M. Hollingsworth of Oak Ridge, Tenn., C. A. Hollingsworth of Greenville and S. S. Hollingsworth of Baton Rouge, La.; a sister, Mrs. L. F. Gregory of Shelby and two brothers, Farrar Hollingsworth of Houston, Texas, and Jack Hollingsworth of Jackson. Published in The Delta Democrat-Times, June 20, 1954
