Bio

U.S. Senator. He attended Upper Iowa University, (1872-75), graduated from the law department of the State University of Iowa, in 1877, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law at Grand Island, Nebraska. He was City Attorney of Grand Island, (1887-88), a member of the board of trustees of Grand Island College in 1893, Mayor of Grand Island, (1895-98) and a member of the Democratic National Committee (1896-1900, (1920-24). He also was a member of the Nebraska State commission for erection of a new capitol and a judge of the Supreme Court of Nebraska, (1924-31). In 1933, he was appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Robert B. Howell, serving until 1934. Not a candidate for reelection, he retired to private life until his death at age 83.
