Bio

Conrad J. Melcher, 99, of Slaton was born February 16, 1912 in LaGrange, Texas. His family moved to Lubbock County in 1924. Conrad attended school in Posey. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the Army Air Corps. Conrad married Frances Elizabeth Steffens on January 21, 1948 in Slaton. Frances preceded him in death on January 26, 2011. He was a cotton farmer, charter board member of McClung Coop Gin where he served as president. Conrad retired from farming in 2002 at the age of 90. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was active with the Knights of Columbus Council 2571 as a third degree member. Conrad was also preceded in death by brothers, Johnny, Frank, Joe, Rudolf, Jerry and Louie and a sister, Mary Jenkins. His survivors include his son, Jack and wife Quita; daughters, Ruth and husband Gary Cook, Toni and husband Archie Chrestman all of Slaton and Mary and Marty Hale of Bedford, along with six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
