Julius A. Petru NEW TAITON, TX — Reverend Msgr. Julius A. Petru, 89, passed away October 15, 2001. He was born in Cameron, Texas on March 1, 1912. He was a Catholic Priest for 64 years, having celebrated his Diamond (60 yrs) Jubilee in 1997. He entered into St. John’s Seminary in San Antonio in 1925. He was ordained April 5, 1937 by the late Archbishop Drossaerts. His first assignment was St. Patrick’s Parish in San Antonio. He became Administrator and later Pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Victoria with McFaddin and Bloomington as Missions. In 1943, he became Pastor of St. John’s in St. John and Ascension Parish in Moravia. In 1949 he became Pastor of Assumption Parish in Praha. In September 1955 he was appointed Pastor of St. Philip’s Church in El Campo with Taiton as its mission. He was the first Dean of the El Campo Deanery. On December 3, 1957, he was elevated to Domestic Prelate by his Holiness Pope Pius XII with the title Rev. Monsignor. He served many years as Secretary on the Archdiocesan Commission of Sacred Music. He served as State Chaplain for the Catholic Daughters from 1960 to 1975. He has served as Chaplain of the El Campo Fire Dept. continuously since 1958. He became Pastor of the newly created Parish of St. John in New Taiton, which he served until this year. He was a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He was active with the Boy Scouts for many years. He received the St. George Award and the Cardinal Medeiros Award. Msgr. Petru is preceded in death by his father, Frank Petru and mother, Johanna Velek Petru and brothers, Louis Petru, Jim Petru and Joseph Petru. He was survived by his sister, Mary Petru Jackson of Raymondville, TX; brothers, Charles Petru of Austin, Frank Petru of Houston, Robert Petru of Houston, Reverend Gus Petru of Mexico City and Rev. Msgr. Stanley Petru of Hostyn. Visitation was on Wednesday at 9 a.m. in Triska Funeral Home until 4 p.m. He laid in state at St. John’s Catholic Church in New Taiton at 5 p.m. A wake service was held at the Church at 7 p.m. Funeral services were held on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in St. John’s Catholic Church with Most Reverend David Fellhauer concelebrated with Rev. Gus Petru, Rev. Msgr. Stanley Petru, Rev. Kirby Hlavaty and attending bishops, priests and deacons. Interment followed at St. Johns Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Triska Funeral Home. Honorary pallbearers were El Campo Fire and EMS Depts; Deacon Edward Wendel; Dr. Ronald Goelzer; and Dr. A.W. Kaltwasser; Dr. Vernon Brau; Maurice Mikeska; Jimmie Triska; Frank Bubela and John Hancock.
