VIRGINIA BEACH - Jon Roger Geer, Capt. U.S. Navy retired, died Feb. 12, 2010 at the age of 85. Capt. Geer, a native of Rule, Texas, retired from the Navy after 27 years of service. A Naval aviator, he served in various operational, staff and command assignments during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. As a fighter pilot, he served in a number of aircraft carriers in both the Pacific and Atlantic Fleets, and commanded Fleet Composite Squadron EIGHT at Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico. He attended the Navy General Line School, Newport, R.I., and the United Kingdom Joint Services Staff College, Latimer, England. He held a master's degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Minnesota. After retiring from the Navy in 1969, Jon Geer was employed by Harris Corporation, retiring from that company in 1989 as director, Eastern Region, Norfolk. He was past president of the Hampton Roads Squadron of the Association of Naval Aviation and a member of the Tailhook Association. He was a member of Virginia Beach Lodge No. 274, AF & AM and Colorado Consistory, A & ASR. He was a senior member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a former member of the Princess Anne Rotary Club. Survivors include his wife, Patsy J. Geer; Patsy's daughter, Kathleen Carter and husband James of Virginia Beach; a son, Dale Thompson and wife Carol of Dunedin, Fla.; four grandchildren, Michael Carter and wife Elisa, Brianne Carter, Christopher Thompson and Amy Joy Thompson; and two great- grandchildren, Keira Carter and Skylar Carter; and sister, Elizabeth Geer Spain and husband Sidney of Tyler, Texas. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at Colonial Grove Memorial Park. There is no planned visitation.
