THE SABETHA HERALD (Sabetha, Kansas)- Wednesday, December 18, 1935- Page 1. H. E. BURKE This community was shocked Saturday when it was learned that former mayor H. D. Burke had suddenly succumbed to a heart attack while calling on Dr. B. W. Conrad, who is confined to his home on account of illness. Mr. Burke has not been very well for several years, but usually was able to be at his office each day. He had been a victim of a heart ailment but his apparent recovering from these attacks caused his friends to believe he had improved in health. Henry Elgin Burke was born June 19th, 1854 in Paradise, Kentucky. Early in his life he became a telegraph operator. This work took him to various points. He was married September 20, 1876 to Miss Florence Alberta McKee in Lathrop, MO. Eight children were born to them. More than forty years ago he came to Sabetha as station agent for the Grand Island railway. Since his retirement eleven years ago, he has served as mayor of the city two terms and since that, served as justice of the peace, at the same time conducting an insurance business. He is survived by two sons, James Burke of Omaha and Drex Burke of Sabetha; four daughters, Mrs. J. E. Marshall of New York City, Mrs. Carl Barton of International Falls, Minn., Mrs. Corrie Kjos of Sabetha, and Mrs. Robert Taylor of Arlington, Kansas. Mrs. Burke and two daughters, Mrs. Nannie Williamson and Mrs. Faye Moore preceded him in death. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and a number of other relatives and a host of friends. H. E. Burke was a town institution. His long service for the railroad company, his Masonic affiliation, his religious activities, his civic leadership identified him with the majority of our citizens in a personal way. Those who knew him respected his high ideals, his unquestioned integrity. Mr. Burke was devoted to his family. His greatest pleasure was making them happy. He adored his wife and was happiest in granting her hearts desire. He has cherished her memory and the thought of joining her in the Great Beyond was his fondest hope. Mr. Burke was intensely religious. His membership in the Methodist church was an affiliation of which avenues of activity in official capacity and regular attendance were faithfully and earnestly utilized. He served in an official capacity in the various Masonic bodies of which he was a member. He believed firmly in the tenets of those organizations and enjoyed their councils and privileges. This community service as mayor of the city and judge of the local court were performed conscientiously and faithfully. During his term as mayor he strove to improve the city and make it a place of which every citizen could be proud. Mr. Burke was respected even by those who disagreed with him, for all recognized that he was honest in his convictions, true to his beliefs. Funeral services were held at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church, conducted by his pastor, Rev. C. T. Cottes. A quartet composed of Mrs. W. H. Durstine, Mrs. A. J. Haxton, B. E. Hause and C. W. Edwards furnished music. The Masonic order had charge of the services at the grave. Interment was in the Sabetha cemetery.
