From The Laclede Blade, June 21, 1918 - Although not unexpected, as he had been lingering between life and death for many weeks, when it was announced from the home, yesterday forenoon that Dr. John L. Burke had passed away, it was a sad realization to all and brought sorrow to every heart that had known this honored and highly esteemed citizen. Born in Morgantown, Ky., Jan 11, 1847, was a Veteran of the Civil war; practiced medicine here since coming to Laclede, in 1881; was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellow Lodges; Commander of the Grand Army Post and an active and faithful member of the Methodist Church. The Widow, two Sons, Dr. F. W., of Laclede and Elgin, of Brookfield, and one Daughter, Mrs. Louise Lippitt, of Meadville, survive. Funeral will be held at the Methodist Church, Saturday, at 2 p.m., and interment made in Laclede Cemetery. Son of Bastten J. Burke and Amanda James. Husband of Mary Frances Moss. John Lewis Burke had four children. The missing child is William Elgin Burke, born December 22, 1882 in Laclede, Missouri, and died January 4, 1943. Was married to Esther Rowland. I don't know why he wasn't listed in John Burke's obit. I have heard he died under mysterious circumstances. -Louese Jackson Kirk, great granddaughter
