Bio

The Brookfield Courier Herman Palmer, a useful and highly respected citizen of Brookfield was born in this town April 11, 1846, and died at his home May 10, 1911, after a long and patient decline. Of New England descent he was the eldest son of Joseph and Adelia Moore Palmer. He received all the advantages of a good education in the public schools, and remained at home, assisting on the farm until eighteen years of age. He then learned the carpenter's trade at which he worked for five years, and then returned to agriculture. July 3, 1867, h e married Laura M. daughter of Nelson Brown. To them Were born four children, Gladys, now Mrs. Egbert Burdick, Glenice, now Mrs. James Hunter, Lawrence and Mott, Mr. Palmer married for his second wife Miss Julia M. Jordan who survives him. To this marriage were born Sherrill, William, Lillian, Laura, Meade, Roslyn and Adele Mr. Palmer was a member of the Baptist church of South Hamilton, having served that body as deacon for nearly forty years. He was fond of his family and took much interest in their moral and educational advancement. He had been an ardent and active Republican and had been influential in party councils for many years. Mr. Palmer served in the Union army from the 31st of August 1864 to June 2nd, 1865. He was a member of Searle Post which organization attended the funeral in a body and conducted the burial service, the bearers being comrades. The funeral which was concucted by Rev. Oscar Guleke was very largely attended from his late home there being present the entire above mentioned family, three grandchildren two brothers, Devillo and Elmer Palmer, one sister Mrs. Ella Galvin, nieces, nephews, and many other relativeas, friends and neighbors. The beautiful flowers were a high tribute to the deceased and to the esteem of the family, expressing in silent language the sympathy of the faculty and senior class of Brookfield High School, the Baraca and Philathea classes of the First Baptist Church of Brookfield and other loving friends. To the bereaved family goes out the sympathy of a host of friends in this time of irreparable loss.
