It is unclear when J F Chaney died since no census records for 1870 for J F, Nancy Jane or Lula. However, Nancy and Jesse were not married in 1870 as he is still in his parents household. Lula was NOT adopted by Jesse Bray but she is listed with the last name of Bray in the 1880 census probably by an assumption of the census taker.
