According to family lore, Newman Wells is buried in an unmarked grave in Big Sandy Mush Methodist Cemetery. He was born abt 1746 in either Pennsylvania or Delaware, most probably the son of James Wells, Jr. and Mary Price. From a grandson's account, Newman was "married twice and had 24 children." One of his wives was Mary Bryson, mother of five of his children who are known to have settled in western North Carolina along with him -- Thomas, Elizabeth, Nunam/Newnam, Jonathan/John Henry, and Mary. His son Newnam (Memorial # 18576737) settled in Pigeon Valley, Haywood Co., just over the mountain from his father's place in the Sandy Mush valley in Buncombe Co. Newman probably had more children who remained in Rutherford Co., where he lived before moving westward. The Bryson family also moved to western NC about the same time as Newman Wells did.
