John Vaughn, son of George and father of William Hamilton had become insane and denied the right to vote prior to the 1870 census. Per the 1870 census of Seguin, Guadalupe Co., Tx John was apparently living in the household of John McLean and wife Jane & their two daughters Susan & Catherine. Jane was John's sister. Plus John's Mother, Catherine, was living there, too, along with two of John's children, Sallie and Emma. Living next to them was John's brother Christopher and his wife Nancy and their children. Considering the social stigma associated with mental illness, at the time, we may have a reason for why, a family with such an illustrious history, would quietly let the information slip away. It seems almost inconceivable that a Texas based family would not readily recount the fact that their ancestors fought in The Revolution, died at Goliad, received large land grants from the Republic and were involved in the establishment of a new nation and eventually a new state. There must have been a reason why we have distanced ourselves. It does indicate that John served as executor of George's estate in Oct 1857. This is per page 103 in the Minute book of B86. It would be unreasonable that a business man with the apparent business savvy of George, that he would appoint an executor that was already insane. It would seem that John's problem developed some time later. In the 1860 Census, John, Martha, William H., Sarah Jane, M. Cordella and John F. resided in Praire Lea, Caldwell CO.,TX. It was after 27 Apr 1869 and by the 1870 census that John was declared insane and lost the right to vote. It's very curious as to why this happened. My thoughts on this are as follows: He lost his wife April 1869, his baby daughter Phenela 1867, daughter Emma 1864, daughter Mary 1852, daughter Maria 1860, a son James 1854. So it could have been more than he could handle. And became very dispondent. He died at the age of 45 as well as his Mother Catherine and brother-in-law John McLean, died within a short time of each other, as well as John in 1870. Possible of some disease. It is speculated that John is buried with his wife Martha Jane McWilliams. Either in Seguin or in Prairie Lea, Caldwell CO., TX. So far his grave, as well as Martha and his mother, Catherine, have not been found in Seguin. So I believe, that although John died in Seguin, that he would have been taken down to Praire Lea to be buried next to his wife and children. John was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Prairie Lea, Caldwell CO., TX
