Bio

Richard J. Witkowski, 88, of Beatrice died at Lakeview Rest Home in Firth on Wednesday afternoon, April 27, 2011. He was born on March 12, 1923, at Beatrice. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School and graduated from Beatrice High School in 1942. He worked at Store Kraft in Beatrice and then served in the Army Air Corps from 1946 to 1947. Following his discharge from the Army Air Corps, he returned to Store Kraft and was a "ticket man" in the machine department and would be considered a "master craftsman" today. He retired in 1987. He was married to Alma Janzen on October 9, 1965, in Lincoln and they lived in Beatrice. He was a life-member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and had been in the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Bitting-Norman Post 27 of the American Legion of Beatrice. He enjoyed woodworking and taking pictures. Survivors include one sister, Rosalie D. Meerian and husband Raymond of Hanover, Kan.; one sister-in-law, Betty Backer of Grand Island; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank J. and Mary Elizabeth Lucks Witkowski; and his, wife Alma, who died on Aug. 12, 2006. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Sixth and High streets, Beatrice, with Father Steve Major officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Beatrice. A memorial has been established to the family's choice. A rosary service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the church. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home , 19th and Garfield, Beatrice, until 9 p.m. Friday evening. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Bitting-Norman Post 27 of the American Legion of Beatrice.
