-------------------------------------------------------- Flatonia. - Joseph A. Mares died in a Houston hospital Thursday, December 17, 1970. The body lay in state in Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Flatonia, where Rosaries were recited. Following a chapel service Saturday morning, December 19, it was conveyed to Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, Cistern, of which he was a life-long member. A Requiem Mass was offered at 10:30 a.m. by the Rev. Edmund J. Bily, Rev. T.T. Janysek of Falls City, a former pastor, was in the sanctuary. Interment was in the new church cemetery. Altar boys were Royce Janca and Simon Vinklarek. Pallbearers were Willie Mares of San Antonio, George Mares of Victoria, Frankie Mares Jr. of Flatonia, Daniel mares and Joe Frebert of Cistern, his nephews, and Ernest Brown of Houston. Joe Mares, was born at Cistern February 25, 1900, and lived his life of 70 years, 9 months and 22 days at Cistern, excepting a few months, when due to failing health he and his wife moved to Flatonia a few months ago. When he was four years old his mother died and when he was six his father died. His second cousins, the late Joe and Matilda Mares, took him into their home and reared him to manhood. November 10, 1919, he and Miss Rosie Dornak were united in marriage in the Gonzales Catholic Church., He was a devout Catholic, a member of the Knights of Columbus, of St. Isidore and KJT Societies; also a charter member of the Cistern Recreation Club. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. J.A. (Margaret) Maki and Mrs. D.J. (Alice) Motel, both of Houston; a son, Edward Mares of Ephrata, Wash.; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, C.J. and Stan Mares, both of Cistern; a half brother, Frank Mares of Flatonia; 2 sisters, Mrs. V.H. (Mollie) Barina of Smithville and Mrs. Ed. (Mary) Holub of Seymour. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Mrs. Annie Morris and Mrs. Charlie (Albina) Frebert on November 18, 1968.
