Bio

George Roland Green,Jr. was born January 17, 1925 to George and Hattie Varner Green in Italy, Texas. George was one of 13 children. His brothers and sisters were Floyd Green, twin brothers; Irvin and Ernest Green, Ethel Hammonds Green, Blanche Green McCarty, Bill Green, Juanita Green, Ellie Ruth Green Henry, Evelyn Green Jenkins, Orrline Green Martin, Virginia Green, and Jack Green. George joined the Merchant Marines during World War II, and served on the SS Belle of the West. After the war he married Oneta Faye Gardner of Iverson (Itasca), Texas. They had three children; Joanna Green Ridlehuber, Rhonda Sherrell Green Windham, and George Roland Green,III. While living in Italy, George was a farmer and also worked at Tyler Refrigeration in Waxachie, Texas. His brothers and sisters remember him fondly as a trickster who was known for the pranks he would pull on family and friends. His children remember him as a hardworking man who worked long hours on the farm and in a factory to support his family. He was a handsome man who enjoyed music and had a talent for playing the guitar. He had a wonderful sense of humor and always had a joke to tell to anyone who would listen. His life was cut too short by a sudden illness. He died at the young age of 42 in a Hillsboro hospital on July 2, 1967. He was buried on the Fourth of July. His death was a shock and a tragic loss to his wife, children, and friends. But when he is thought of or talked about, one can't help but smile, laugh, or chuckle about something humorous he did or said. He touched many lives and is greatly missed.
