Adam served in Co. H, 58th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, U.S. Army Expeditionary Force to Europe. He landed in France on 4 June 1918 & marched to an area south of Verdun. During a German artillery barrage on 18 July 1918 at St. Mihiel, France, Adam suffered a serious wound to his left hand. By 3 October 1918 he was back with his unit as they were poised in the forests surrounding Brieulles, France. Early that morning, donning their gas masks, the 58th Infantry participated in the final attack of the war; which ended a few days later. Adam and his unit were then marched 330 miles in 15 days to take up occupation duty in the German town of Bad Bertrich. In July 1919 they marched back to the coast of France, and sailed for America on 31 July 1919.
