40 Years 4 Months and 14 Days of Age.
From The Ravenna News, December 8, 1899, page 8, transcribed by Linda Berney: Jacob J. Hosek died at his home in this city Tuesday, December 5th 1899,at 10 a.m. The deceased was born at Danna, Bohemia, July 21, 1859, and was a little more than forty years of age at the time of his death. He leaves a wife and six children, the eldest fifteen years old and the youngest 18 months. He was a member in good standing of the A. O. U. W. and of the Catholic Knights, and carried life insurance in those orders to the amount of $ 3,000. In 1894 Mr. Hosek's health failed rapidly, owing to some mysterious disorder of the stomach, and he was sent to the sanitarium at Lincoln, and Dec. 18th of that year submitted to a surgical operation which was considered one of the most novel successful operations on record. Appended is a description of the Hosek operations, kindly furnished at The News request by Dr. S. N. Bently, of this city, who witnessed in the first operation, and who has watched the developments of the case with keen professional interest. After the first operation Mr. Hosek recovered rapidly, but in the course of a few months he commenced to lose ground again and another operation no less remarkable than the first was performed. Mr. Hoseks wonderful vitality aided him to recover and he enjoyed fairly good health until about six months ago, when he commenced to fail again and he gradually grew worse until death relieved him of his suffering. The funeral was held at the Catholic church Thursday noon, Rev. Father Dunda saying high mass over the remains, and concluding the service with a sermon in Bohemian. The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery by the Catholic Knights which order had charge of the funeral. [A very long description of The Hosek Operations followed.]
