There are so many variations in regards to the spelling of Riclef's name within documents and census records. I found the following records for him. U.S. City Directories Illinois Peoria 1879-1882 Root's Peoria City Directory 1879 Leerhoff, Rickkelt H. car repairer, T.P. & W.; res. 322 Butler Peoria, Illinois 1883 - 84 City Directory Page 303 Leerhoff Rikkelt, car builder W. St. L & P.Ry. r. 400 Butler Personal Note: The references above with "car" was too early to mean automotive industry because that didn't start till the early 1900's. The cars they are referring to above are railroad cars. I did a little research online and discovered that Peoria was like a railway hub during that timeframe. A total of 12 different railroad lines came into Peoria and then on out of there in different directions. The T.P. & W. referrred to above was the Toledo, Peroria, Western Railway and the St. L & P was St. Louis and Peoria. In the late 1870's early 1880's the railroad started expanding into Iowa. Very probable that Riclelf took his family and moved with the railroad and his job to settle in Iowa. Butler County developed a large concentration of Germans settling in that area at that time.
