Leo M. "Sonny" Barta, Jr., 70, of Baytown, passed away early Thursday, April 7, 2011 at a Baytown hospital following a courageous battle with a lengthy illness. Born in Ammannsville, Texas, on November 22, 1940, he was the son of Leo and Agnes (Balcar) Barta. He graduated from Schulenburg High School in 1959 with his high school sweetheart, Veronica Janacek. On October 1, 1960 he and Vera were married in Schulenburg and moved to Baytown two days later. He served in the Houston Police Department for five years, but eventually became an electrical contractor and the owner of Barta Electric, Inc., in Baytown. He was a member of St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church. Preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jerome and Edwin Barta, and two sisters, Alma Appelt and Evelyn Boehm, Sonny is survived by the love of his life and wife of over 50 years, Vera Barta; two daughters, Terri Hotchkiss and her husband, Sammy, and Tammie Barta; three grandchildren, Ryan, Tiffany, and Heather Hotchkiss, all of Baytown; and sister-in-law, Edna Barta.
