Bio

She died in Midlothian, Dallas, Texas. ----- In the early morning of Monday, Sep 21, Jeanette Mae (Vasut) Hollub, 81, lost her struggle with pancreatic cancer at her son's home with her family by her side. She was born on Nov 20, 1927, in Schulenburg and attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic School. In 1945, she graduated from Schulenburg High School. She attended the University of Houston Junior College and earned an associate degree in nursing in May 1947. While she was there, her compassion and care for those injured and killed in the Texas City disaster on April 16, 1947, showed through when she cared for many of them. She went on to become a registered nurse through St. Joseph's School of Nursing in May 1948. On Aug 29, 1948, she married Alexander A. Hollub and moved to Bastrop and then to Austin, where she worked at St David's Hospital. While at St David's she was involved in the care of various members of the Texas Legislature, including Lyndon B. Johnson, whom she nursed back to health in the early 1950's. She moved to Poteet where she raised her son and helped run a family business, Poteet Pharmacy. In 2004 , she moved back to her hometown of Shulenburg, where she lived at the Regency Villas Retirement Center and was a member of St Pose Catholic Church. She had many friends and enjoyed various events with her friends, among them Harvey Fehrenkamp, who was a particular friend, companion and inspiration to her. Her joy of life reflected in many of her creative efforts and outgoing personality. She designed and sewed many of her own clothes, and designed and decorated her home. Her creative skills in cooking led her to win several cooking contests in San Antonio. Her compassion for others was reflected in the joy of visiting those in Schulenburg and Poteet nursing homes to lend a gentle touch or healing smile to residents there. "Her outgoing and vibrant personality will be missed by her family and friends whom she touched with her outgoing nature," her family writes. He parents, Joseph and Adela M. "Della" Dobrava Vasut preceded her in death. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Alex and Ann Hollub of Midlothan; her brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Billy Jane Vasut of Nashville and three grandchildren, Laura Oliver, Kevin Hollub and Tiffany Hollub.
