Mrs. David Strayhorn Rites Scheduled Sunday in Snyder SNYDER, Jan. 8 -- Funeral for Mrs. David Pope Strayhorn, 79, Scurry County resident since 1889, is to be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the First Methodist Church. Mrs. Strayhorn died at 10:50 a.m. Friday in the Battenfield-Jones Hospital Clinic here. She had been hospitalized since undergoing major surgery three weeks ago. Conducting services will be the Rev. J. Lennol Hester, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Bill Lewis, pastor of Trinity Methodist Church. Burial in Snyder Cemetery will be under direction of Bell Funeral Home. Mrs. Strayhorn was the widow of a Snyder hardware and implements merchant. She was born Lucy Overa Grantham Sept. 24, 1875, in Snyder, Ark. She moved with her family to Scurry County in 1889. Mrs. Strayhorn, who attended Weatherford and Liberty, Mo., colleges, taught in public schools here for nine years. For many years she was a soloist in the First Methodist choir. April 7, 1902, she was married to D. P. Strayhorn in Snyder. The couple lived in Big Spring from 1904 to 1908, but made their home in Snyder since then. At the time of her death, Mrs. Strayhorn was president of the Victory Bible Sunday School class and active in the Women's Society of Christian Service. For five years she had been the official weather observer here. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. E. L. Kubala and Mrs. J. P. Nelson of Snyder and Mrs. Ross Howard of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, David Strayhorn, owner of the Strayhorn Courts here; a brother, R. C. Grantham of Snyder; five grandchildren; two nieces, Mrs. Rex A. Smith of Abilene and Mrs. Ray Hendricks of Snyder; and a nephew, Olan Hendricks of Dallas. [from the Abilene (Texas) Reporter-News, January 8, 1955]
