Harold Franklin Johnson Services for Harold Franklin Johnson, 89, of Canton, TX, are scheduled for 10:00 AM Tuesday March 8, 2011 at Eubank Funeral Chapel with Rev. Don Childress officiating, under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home, Canton. Burial will be in Haven of Memories, Canton, TX. He passed away March 4, 2011 in Kaufman, TX. Mr. Johnson was born September 29, 1921 in Canton, TX, to Benjamin Franklin and Minnie Eudora Gibbs Johnson. Harold attended First Baptist Church of Canton. He was a member of the VFW, a life time member of the Van Zandt Co. Genealogical Society, The Historie Aviation Military Museum (Hamm). He grew up in the Canton area and graduated from Edgewood High School. He joined the US Navy in 1941, during WWII he was the Crew Chief on a PBY Catalina. During his Naval career he trained many Mercury 7 Astronauts. When he retired in 1964, the Navy said he was the best all around athlete the Navy had seen in 25 years. After retiring from the Navy, he began a second career as a teacher in both High School and College level of education. After retiring from teaching he was selected as Van Zandt Co. Citizen of the year due to his volunteer work with Meals on Wheels and teaching GED classes. Even in his later years he was active in Senior Olympics in horse shoe competitions, table tennis, checkers and chess tournaments. In May of 2010 Harold participated in the Brookshires Sponsored trip to the WWII Memorial in Washington DC. Memorials may be made to the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial 600 South Trades Day Blvd. Canton, TX. 75103. He was preceded in death by Wife, Ruth Johnson, 4 Brothers, Bunyan Johnson, Farbie Johnson, Cecil "Cotton" Johnson, Cone Johnson, 3 Sisters, Ibera Bateman, Fontilla Holman, Merline Morrison, Daughter, Cheryl Ann Johnson and his parents. Survived by: 5 Daughters: Patricia Wolford of Forney, TX. Janice Kay & Steven Whitson of Lancaster, CA. Terri Lee & Billy Don Sartain of Canton, TX. Debra Johnson of Canton, TX. Diana & Tim Golden of Denver, CO Son: Michael & Becky Johnson of Arlington, TX. 10 Grandchildren 13 Great Grandchildren 1 Great-Great Grandchild Extended family at Jewel's Resturant. Pallbearers are: Josh Reimers, Tom Perry, Kenneth Sartain, Chad Brinkman, Doug Layne, Bill Sartain, Tim Golden, Carlos Mora. Family will receive friends Monday 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
