Lola Iris Bahr Despain, 84, of Caldwell, passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2009 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009 at the Middleton LDS Stake Center, 23644 US Hwy 30, Caldwell. A viewing will be held at the church from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, and at the church on Saturday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. prior to the funeral services. Iris entered this world June 30, 1924, in Cederview, Duschene Co., Utah. Her parents were Albert Andrew Bahr and Jessie Edith Butt. She was the 8th child in the family having six older brothers (five living) and one sister. Later four more children joined the family (one died as a baby). Times were very hard for the large family. Even though they had very little, they made their own entertainment and had lots of fun together. Her sister, Alice was her special friend. Iris started school at age 6 in Cederview. When she was in the fourth grade, her dad moved the family to Shelley, Idaho. There she attended schools in Shelley and Osgood. In 1933 the family moved to the Ontario, Ore., area where they met the Despain family. A courtship began between Iris and Parley. Parley went away to work in the Seattle area and decided to propose to Iris. Even though Iris was only 17, she accepted the proposal. They were married Sept. 29, 1941, in Fruitland and later were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. After 64 years of marriage, Parley died in 2005. After their marriage, they moved to Seattle, Wash., to begin their life together. In March of 1942 Parley was drafted into the Army. Iris moved back home while he served in the war. In June of 1945, Parley was discharged from the Army. Parley and Iris then were blessed with two daughters, Alice and Glenna. After Parley returned from the war, they bought a small 40-acre farm on the Ontario slope and began farming. Two more children, Ann and Albert, were born during these years and Parley decided they needed a larger farm. In 1950 they bought 80 acres in the new Black Canyon Irrigation Sand Hollow area north of Caldwell. The family moved into a one-room house (later it became the barn). They began to build a larger house, a dairy herd and to tame the ground. Iris and Parley worked together side by side in this endeavor. Lonnita and Brett were born during this time period making a total of six children. Iris lived on the farm for 59 years prior to her death. Iris was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held many positions and was always very faithful in her callings. Her last and favorite was being a visiting teacher in the Middleton 1st Ward for many years. Gentle, caring, courteous, kind and good listener are all words we could use to describe Iris. Our list could go on and on but we would soon run out of paper. We will just end by saying she was the best mom, grandma, mother-in-law, wife and friend anyone could ever have. We love you mom and will miss you! When we think of the angels in heaven, we will think of you! Iris is survived by her five children and their spouses, Alice and Ralph West of Caldwell, Glenna and Richard Grover of Gooding, Ann and Joe Holmes of Ogden, Utah, Lonnita and Marc Walker of West Point, Utah, Brett and Sarah Despain of Caldwell and one daughter-in-law Linda Despain Knudsen of Kennewick, Wash.; 38 grandchildren, 96 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Babiracki and Leona Rowley, two brothers, Cecil (Mary) Bahr and LaVere (Diana) Bahr; five sisters-in-law: Mildred, Elva and Louie Jean Bahr, Fern (Mac) Belnap and Faye Callahan, two brothers-in-law, Marden and Parker Despain; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family. She is preceded in death by her husband, her son, Albert, seven brothers: Francis, Bill, Quentin, Leland, Lavern, Marcellus and Emil, two granddaughters, Tammy Despain and Jean Holmes, and one grandson, Tim Holmes. The family suggests a contribution to Primary Children's Hospital or another charity of their choice.
