Brown, Childress CHILDRESS, Tex. (Special) - A.J. Brown, 73, former Childress deputy sheriff, died Sunday of an apparent heart attack. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Newberry Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Marvin James, pastor of First United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Ron Pingleton, pastor of Central Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery. Born Dec. 5, 1901, in Santa Anna, Tex., Brown moved to Childress in 1906. He was graduated from Childress High School in 1917, and attended U.S. Naval Academy and Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Brown was a retired farmer and former chief of police. He was a veteran of World War II. He married Mildred Phillips June 17, 1950, in Quanah, Tex. Survivors include his wife; and two brothers, Bob and Earl of Childress.
