42nd Tennessee Infantry, Company K.
The son of Pleasant Whitwell and Margaret Anderson, born in Hickman County, Tennessee. At the time of the 1850 Federal Census the family was farming in Perry County,Tennessee, and Elijah was one of 15 inhabitants on the farm. Besides his parents and himself, only three others on the census had the family name Whitwell, John A, Mary J, and Pleasant W. Elijah and Jincy Angeline Randel were married in 1851. They had four children: James Franklin Whitwell (1854-1935) John Randel Whitwell (1856-1938) Martha Delilah Whitwell (1858-1920) William Amos Whitwell (1860-1915) The youngest child was not yet born at the time the 1860 Census was taken. The family post office was Linden and they had a farm in Perry County, Tennessee. The value of the estate is listed as $500. Only one of the tree children attended school within that year. Many members of the Whitwell family enlisted in the cause of the Confederacy and Elijah was among them. He enlisted in the 42nd Tennessee Infantry, Co. K on 8 Nov 1862 at Linden, Perry County, Tennessee. He appears on the hospital muster roll on 31 Aug 1863 at Lauderdale, Mississippi. The record does not show anything other than he was a patient there. The Company Muster Roll for 20 Oct 1863 shows him at Camp Cummings, Alabama. During the Battle of Franklin in Williamson County, Tennessee, 30 Nov 1864, Elijah Houston Whitwell lost his life, fighting to defend the honor of his state and his family. He was survived by his wife and four children, both his parents, and his six brothers and sisters.
