MARY ETTA HASTINGS DANIELS THIBUS Mary Etta Hastings is the daughter of Platt Hull Hastings and Mary Ellen Grindell. Mary married first Willis Daniels. They had no children. Mary married second Charles Thibus. They were coming home when Accident Occured" "Mrs Mary E Thibus of 1731 Lincoln Street and Charles L Benton about 46 of 816 Michigan Avenue, were killed Sunday afternoon when their motor car was struck by Santa Fe Passenger train No 18 at a crossing near Spencer station. Mrs Thibus and Benton had spent the day at a picnic held at the George Kreipe home near Spencer whre more than 200 friends and relatives celebrated the birthdays of George Kriepe and his twin sister Miss Mary Kreipe. John Hastings of Grantville, Mrs Thibus brother, also attended the affair but was not an occupant of Mrs Thibus Chrysler car. As the car approached the crossing, they stopped while an eastbound passenger train ran into the Spencer switch and then drove on the tracks. They apparently did not see the westbound train approaching the crossing at high speek. Both victums were killed instantly and parts of the demolished motor car strewn along the railroad for a quarter of a mile. Benton, a widower had been a clerk in the Topeka Postoffice more than 15 years. He lived near Athol, Kan before coming here. Two sons survive. Mrs Thibus, a widow, is survived by a daughter and a son, both of Topeka. The train came to a stop and brought the bodies to Topeka. They were taken to the Wall-Diffendorfer Morturay pending further arrangements."
