KILLED BY LIGHTENING Farmer Near Ashton Instantly Killed while Stacking Grain Mike Szydzyk , a Polish farmer, was killed by lightening last Saturday morning while stacking grain while on his farm about seven miles north of Ashton. He had just been driving to the stack with a load of grain and had begun unloading when his ten year old boy who was on the stack remarked that they had better just throw a few bundles in the middle of the stack as it was going to rain, when a bolt of lightening struck Mike on the head which tore the top off his head off and burned his lower limbs. His son fell off the stack dazed but soon gained consiousness and seeing what had happened began to pull his dead father away fronm the load of grain which had caught fire and by the aid of another boy who had been plowing near by, they succeeded in getting him far enough away from the fire to keep from burning up. Neighbors rushed to the scene, and managed to get the horses away from the wagon and the only thing that burned up was the grain and wagon. The little boys deserve great credit for their courage in getting their father away from the fire instead of running away frightened as some might has done. Mike Szydzyk was a hard working man , a good neighbor and well respected in his community. He leaves a wife and seven children the oldest of which is only twelve years old to mourn his loss. It is a sad thing to see a middle aged man (as the deceased was only thirty-five years of age) taken from a happy home and hurled into instant death without a moments warning. The funeral services were held at the Catholic church at Paplin last Sunday forenoon. The entire community sympathizes with this sorrowing family. The Times-Independent - Aug 20 1909
