Bio

Born in Butler County, Kentucky Mrs. Obitha Hampton, mother of Mrs. Elizabeth Harris, grandmother of Mrs. J.H. Walton, Great grandmother of Mrs. Fred Emerson, and great great grandmother of her little daughter Florence of this city died Sunday morning at six o'clock at the home of her granddaughter Mrs. Dr. Little, who lives in Maple of this county. She was eighty nine years old and her death was due to the infirmities of old age. Mrs. Hampton was born in Butler County, Kentucky, Aug, 21, 1812, and her maiden name was Morris. She was a sister of L.T. Morris who lived and died near Liberty. The Liberty Methodist Church is a gift of his generosity. At the age of 18, she was married to Mr. William Hampton, who immigrated to Texas in the year of 1846, and settled in Bonham, Fannin County. They moved to Collin County in 1855 and lived for ten years near what is known as the Harris and Hampton mill five miles northeast of McKinney. After the war they moved to Weston, where Mr. Hampton died in 1887. To them one son and six daughters were born. The son, Monroe, died in the army in the Civil War, and one daughter, Miss Nova, died at the age of twenty. Mrs. Harris is the oldest daughter being now in her seventieth year. Mrs. Jim Stinnett, the next oldest, died many years ago and is buried at old Mantun, twelve miles north of McKinney. Her three sons are now prominent dry goods merchants in Sherman. Her fourth daughter, Mrs. Jesse Orendorff, lives at Melissa, and Mrs. Jasper Chambers is a resident of Jack County. Mrs. Hampton made her home with her granddaughter for a number of years up until the time of her death. She had been a member of the Methodist Church from early girlhood. Democrat 20 March 1902 p7
