Chester N. St. John, 83, 713 E. Fifth St., died Sunday at Kittitas Valley Community Hospital. He was born July 4, 1896 at Thorp and spent his early life in the Lower Valley, returning to the Ellensburg area in 1923. He started farming in the Parke Creek District and later farmed on the Vantage Highway until retirement in 1965 when he moved into Ellensburg. He was a member and past president of the Ellensburg Eagles Lodge, a member of the Washington State Horse Pullers Association and a co-founder, past president and 35-year member of the Ellensburg Chapter of the horse pullers organization. He is survived by his wife, Syble, whom he married in Vancouver, Washington in 1946; a daughter, Marge Culbertson of Yakima; a granddaughter, Mary Bonny of Grandview; two stepsons, Jack Allen of Ellensburg, and L. D. Allen of Augusta, Georgia; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Mike (Alpha) Rossett of Cle Elum, Mrs. Frank (Pegge) Richards of Bellevue and Mrs. Barry (Jimmy) Johnson of Ellensburg. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol, in 1964. Funeral services at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Evenson Chapel with the Rev. Bill Dietz officiating. Entombment will follow at IOOF Mausoleum.
