Bio
Marie Sokol was born Sept. 26, 1873 in Sacki, Bohemia. At the age of three, she came to the United States with her parents. They settled on a homestead six miles northeast of Verdigre. Here she grew to womanhood. In 1893 she married Anton Vavak of near Jelen. To this union were born twelve children, nine sons and three daughters, all living in the Jelan neighborhood. Deceased had been in the best of health until about two years ago, when she became afflicted with the disease which caused her death. Her health began to fail and she had been confined to her home. Death came to her Tuesday, July 10 a the age of 54 years, 9 months and 24 days. Besides the husband and children, she is survived by her aged father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Sokol Sr, three brothers and four sisters. Funeral services were held from the home near Jelen, Thursday of last week, under auspices of the ZCBJ Lodge of which she was a member. Many beautiful floral tributes testified in their mute way to the high esteem in which she was held by all. Jacob F. Kolar read the funeral address in the Bohemian language. Interment was made in the Jelen cemetery.
