Published in the Athens Review June 7, 1951 Mrs. Edna Smith, 71, Athens, died suddenly at 10 o'clock Sunday morning in the home of a daughter in Ft. Worth. Mrs. Smith, whose home was at 220 Dean Street, was born in Athens and had lived here all her life. Funeral rites were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday from the Church of Christ here in Athens, with burial in the City Cemetery. Kermit Upshaw conducted. Pallbearers were Lonnie Pickle, Fred Mitchell, Bill McDowell, Ross Smith, Frank Wyrick and Otis Houston. Survivors include one son, D.L. Smith of Ft. Worth; four daughters, Mrs. Jewell Tanner, Athens; Mrs. Kristell Newbill, Ft. Worth; Mrs. Melba Rene Mitchell, Pine Bluff, Arkansas; and Mrs. Hayden Hood, Ft. Worth; one brother, Elton Cox of Athens; three sisters, Mrs. Gertie Gauntt, Waco; Mrs. Edith Kelly, Muskogee, Okla.; and Mrs. Cecil Harker, Ft. Worth; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death in 1938. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Hassell-Foster Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
