Bio

Mr. Gates came to Henry county when he twelve years old and lived here until he moved to Monroe, Nebraska. He also lived several years in Iowa, returning to Illinois in 1916 and moving to Elmira in 1920 where he made his home until his death. He was married to Susan Russell, who survives. There are fifteen nieces and nephews also living. Four brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. Mr. Gates united with the Presbyterian church while in Nebraska and in 1900 he was elected an elder in his church to which he always remained a faithful worker. Mr. Gates engaged in farmiln for many years. Ed's will, dated 1920 leaves property to wife and his niece, Mrs. Sadie E. Cole, of Broken Bow, Nebraska or her daughter, Mary Susan Cole, and to Mrs. Eula Hill , relationship not given, of Monroe, Nebraska. Estate probate document, 1931, names wife, Susan E. Gates, widow, of Elmira, IL; sons and daughters of Augustus Gates , deceased brother: George Gates of Dallas Cemter, Iowa, Clem Gates of Redfield, Iowa, Fred Gates of Minburn, Iowa, Edward Gates of Lyons, Kansas, Belle Robertson of Dallas Center, Iowa, Emma Colgen [McColgin] of Valley Junction, Iowa, Bessie Elliott of Minburn, Iowa, Roy Gates of Dallas Center,Iowa; and sons and daughters of Emma Gates Russell & deceased sister [Elizabeth Gates Lyon (Mrs. Marion M. Lyon)]: Ida [Lyon] Dutro of Glendale, California, Edward Lyon of Chatuc, Wisconsin, Charles Lyon of Westermule(?), Ohio, Fred Russell of Arcadia, Nebraska; Albert E.
