Obituary courtesy of Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Homes: Carrie L. Placek, 84, of Columbus, died at 11:55 a.m. Monday, October 4, 2010, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. Mrs. Placek retired in 1985 from the accounting department at Vernco where she had worked for 23 years. She was formerly employed in the accounting department at the American Red Cross in Fort Knox, Ky., where she met her husband. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was involved in the Prayer Team. She enjoyed bowling, reading, camping, fishing, playing cards, crossword and Sudoku puzzles, singing, writing songs, playing the guitar, making candy and sharing it with others. A great listener and advisor to all her family and friends, she was a mentor to adults and grade school children in reading and math. Mrs. Placek was born in Hardinsburg, KY, August 26, 1926, the daughter of Hubert Stinnett Sr. and Betty Claycomb Stinnett. She married Raymond L. Placek, April 22, 1946, in Hardinsburg, Kentucky. They honeymooned at Clifty Falls. The couple moved to Columbus in the 1950s and in 1958 became the proud parents of twin sons, Ronald and Donald. Every holiday was celebrated with great food and a round of Canasta. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Dr. Daniel Cash officiating. Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and from noon until service time Friday. Entombment will be at Garland Brook Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana. Mrs. Placek is survived by a son, Ronald H. (Cheryl) Placek of Columbus; a sister, Nell (Bill) Decker of Owensboro, KY; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on January 19, 2001; a brother, Hubert Stinnett Jr.; a sister, Emma Sandefur; a son, Don R. Placek; and a grandchild, Toby Placek.
