Columbus was son of Jackson Overstreet Haile. He was a raiser of horses and cattle in Billings, Christian County, Missouri. Columbus was married to Leticia Howcroft, daughter of the Mayor of Billings. He had 8 children by Leticia before she died in child birth in 1895. Columbus then married Della M Newton ca. 1897 and had 6 more children.
