Ernest "Edd" Edward Steel, 97, of North Platte, passed away April 3, 2006, at Centennial Park. He was born Oct. 5, 1908, to Frank and Sophia Soltow Steel in Lincoln County. He was born on the ranch northeast of North Platte where his father homesteaded. He attended the Steel District 5 county school through the eighth grade. On Nov. 24, 1928, he married Janie Powell. In 1938, he bought the homestead from his mother. He farmed and ranched his entire life. He never really quit working until he broke his hip three years ago. He and Janie loved to dance. They hosted many barn dances and sponsored many dances at the youth cabin in Cody Park, the Knights of Columbus Hall and the Senior Center. They were members of the '21' Dance Club, the Sunshine Dance Club and the Riverside Dance Club. The couple even danced at their 75th wedding anniversary. He was a member of the Nebraska Cattleman's Association. He was an honest, thrifty, hard-working family man. He also had a good sense of humor and sometimes played practical jones on his friends. Survivors include his wife of North Platte; a daughter, Marie (Harvey) Grasz of North Platte; a son, Wesley (Joy) Steel of North Platte; granddaughters, Staron (Steve) Duennerman of Kearney, Barbara (Billy Schneurle) Grasz of Kearney, Karen (Mark) McVey of Haigler, Pat Correll of Mitchell, and Sherri Britton of North Platte; grandsons, Roger (Kelli) Grasz of North Platte and Eddie (Susan) Steel of Hyannis; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Clara Eshelman and Sophia Long; three brothers, Frank, Harry and Otto Steel; a grandson, Mike Steel; and a great-great-grandson, James Dyan Vander Wey. A memorial has been established to the Senior Center in his name. Condolences can be made at www.adamsswanson.com. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Adams & Swanson Chapel with the Rev. Nathan Wadewitz officiating. Burial will be at Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.
