Samuel enlisted in the Confederacy in October of 1862, reported on June 30, 1863. to April 30, 1864. He was captured at the Battle of Big Black River Bridge in Mississippi. This was a big disaster for the South they lost some 1800 troops to the North and led the way to the capture of Vicksburg a Southern stronghold. Samuel was taken to Point Lookout Prison in Maryland, in St. Mary's County on May 17, 1863. He was paroled in a prisoner exchange and released at Coves Landing, James River Virginia February 14, 1865 . His wife, Rebecca filed for his pension July 27th,1916 and approved on August 05, 1916.
