Van Alstyne Leader January 22, 1960 - Page 1 LONG-TIME RESIDENT OF VAN ALSTYNE LAID TO REST Funeral services for Mrs. Effie Kate Umphress, widow of the late Tom J. Umphress, were held at the Methodist Church last Friday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. Walter B. Sullens of Honey Grove, and Rev. Sale Lilly, pastor. Interment was in the City Cemetery under the direction of Flesher Funeral Home. Pallbearers were John Phillips, Jess Farrington, Choyee Pierson, Marvin Parmer, Turner Means and Hansel Parker. Mrs. Umphress died at her home here last Wednesday, Jan. 13, at 9:30 a.m. She suffered a stroke on Mother's Day of last year. Mrs. Umphress was the daughter of the late Joe A. and Florence Keeling Phillips. She was born in Collin County on Oct. 13, 1884, and had lived all her life in and around Van Alstyne. Her husband Tom J. Umphress, preceded her in death in April 1954. She was a member of the Methodist Church. A wonderful mother, and a good neighbor, she had a host of friends. She loved her church and was a regular attendant until illness forced her to remain at home. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Albert L. Hooker of Granbury and Mrs. Sam McKowan of Sherman; by four sons, Jesse Joe Umphress of Euless, Loyce T. Umphress of Denton, Weldon Umphress of Turkey and Bobby Umphress of Washington, D.C.; by seven grandchildren; by five sisters, Mrs. Beulah Kemp and Mrs. Mabel Selph of Van Alstyne, Mrs. Jewel Pierson of Fort Worth, Mrs. Pearl Carruth of Weston and Mrs. Bonnie Holand of Anna; by two brothers, Albert Phillips of Van Alstyne and Jack Phillips of Bonham.
