Bio

Leona Willard McGuire Stephenson was born in Oklahoma to Willard Scott and Oma Mae Stafford McGuire. Her siblings were Myrtle, Johnnie, Opal, and Henry. Between 1920 and 1930, her family moved to Cherokee County, Texas where she met and married James Bentily (J.B.) Stephenson, a Pentecostal preacher and lumber grader. They lived in Wells, where their only child, a daughter, Dorothy Leona Stephenson, was born in 1932. J.B. and Leona moved to Pineland, TX in the 1950s when J.B. was hired by Southern Pine Lumber Company. Leona also began working there. The couple retired in the 1970s and moved to Huntington, TX, to live near their daughter and her family. Lee, as she preferred to be called, was a vivacious woman with a wicked sense of humor. She was, in many ways, ahead of her time. Leona passed away in 1989 from complications associated with Alzheimer's.
