Bio

Published in the Athens Review July 26, 1956 Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church of Athens Monday at 10 a.m. for Herbert Gibbs (Grannie) Brazeel, 37, Athens building contractor, who was killed in an automobile accident Saturday about 7:15 p.m. at Murchison. Another Athens man, Don D. Taylor, also 37, was injured in the accident. Attendants at Henderson County Memorial Hospital said he received lacerations about the face and one leg and was resting well. State Highway Patrolmen said Brazeel was driving a 1954 Ford coach toward Athens and failed to negotiate a curve about 100 yards east of the intersection of Farm Road 773 and State Highway 31 in Murchison. They said the car left the right side of the roadway, sheared off one telephone pole, jumped a dirt road and a drainage ditch and came to rest against another telephone pole about 265 feet from where it first left the roadway. The car was demolished. Patrolmen said they were told both men were thrown from the car. It was Henderson County's eighth traffic fatality this year. Funeral services for Mr. Brazeel were conducted by the Rev. Lee Ramsour, pastor of the First Baptist Church, and the Rev. John Barkley, pastor of the Black Jack Baptist Church. Burial was in the Red Hill Cemetery, with Carroll and Lehr Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Conley Scott, Lloyd Hood, Thurman Hood, Hoyle Norman, Bill Browning and A.C. Horton. Mr. Brazeel, whose home was at 503 Laurel Lane, was born in the Black Jack community June 19, 1919. He had lived in Henderson County all of his life and attended school at Black Jack and Athens. Survivors are his wife; parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Brazeel of Athens; one brother, Roy Brazeel of Athens; and two sisters, Mrs. Roy Stroud of Houston and Mrs. Muriel Bass of Athens.
