Bio

Edward was the sixth of seven children born to Edward and Catherine Ryan Loughlin. His parents had emigrated from Ireland (County Mayo) and possibly Great Britain between 1874 and 1880. Siblings, Annie T. (11 – England), Thomas Joseph (10 – England), William (1876 - ?), and John James (1880 - ?) were likely born in England. The family had settled in Morris County, New Jersey in the area of Dover or Mount Pleasant, where his father, Edward, continued employment as a miner. Edward Joseph's closest brother in age, Daniel Francis (1882), was born in Dover, New Jersey, USA. On several documents, Edward's birthplace was listed as Dover (1900 US Census, PA Death Certificate). Later documents record Pennsylvania as his birthplace. Edward's birthdate is much more ambiguous. The 1900 US Census lists Aug 1882 as his birth data. His marriage registration from 1910 has a birthdate of December 22, 1883. The same day, December 22, is given on Edward's WW I draft registration, but two years earlier, 1881. His death certificate lists a birthdate of June 12, 1883. Between 1883 and 1887, the Loughlin family moved to Edwardsville, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. It was here that younger brother, Matthew, was born in 1887. It appears that the senior Edward was moving his family from one mining region to another in pursuit of his family's well-being; from Ireland to England (Wales ?) to the Hibernia Mines of New Jersey, then finally the anthracite coal region of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Mother, Catherine Ryan Loughlin died between 1887 and 1897. Edward's father, Edward, died in July 1897. The 1900 US Census (Jun) records Edward Joseph living with several of his brothers. Thomas Joseph Loughlin (26) is noted as "head of household" (wife Mary); John James (19), Daniel Francis (17), along with Edward Joseph (17) were all living at 57 Pace Street in Kingston, Luzerne County. Thomas and John were the only brothers listed as employed; both working in the coal mines. They also both listed an immigration year as 1879. [Even though John also lists a birthplace in England in 1880 !] Thomas, Mary, Daniel, and Edward, along with a Martin Loughlin (relationship unknown?) are living in a house at 127 Orchard Street in Plymouth by 1905 (Wilkes-Barre City Directory). Edward Joseph Loughlin and Johanna C. Driscoll filed for a marriage license on September 19, 1910 in Luzerne County. She was born in Plymouth to Irish immigrants. The signed license was not returned, so no wedding date is confirmed. An article (only indexed, not read) appeared in the Wilkes-Barre Record on September 22 regarding the marriage, putting a wedding date likely on September 21, but possible from the 19th-22nd . Edward and Johanna had two children. Helen Nolasko Loughlin was born about 1912. Four years later, James V. Loughlin was born in 1916. The Loughlin family resided at 24 Coal Street in Plymouth and Edward worked at several positions within the coal mines. First recorded in his draft registration for WW I, these facts would remain true until his death thirteen years later. This registration from September 1918, recorded Edward as working in the Truesdale Colliery (Hanover Township) for the D.L. & W. Coal Company. It was noted he had grey eyes and graying hair. The 1920 US Census confirms Edward's residential and employment information. It also lists Anna Driscoll (58), Johanna's widowed mother and James Driscoll (23) as residing with the family of four. The same six individuals are in the same home ten years later, Edward (46), Johanna (44), Helen (18), James (14), Anna Driscoll (68), and Joseph Driscoll (34). None of them were recorded as being employed when reporting for the census in April 1930. The Great Depression had just begun some six months earlier, but all ready seems to have impacted this family group. The rent for the home at 24 Coal Street was listed at $26.60 (per month ?). Edward was suffering from myocarditis and under a physician's care from mid-September until the time of his death on November 30, 1931. He was 48 (birthdate listed as June 12, 1883). His wife served as informant for the certificate listed there as Mrs. Edward Loughlin, but signed "by her mark", an 'X.' In another section her name was listed as "Josephine," a name not found in any other documentation. cod: myocarditis Patrilineage: Edward, William Loughlin 13 Jul 2023
