The Act of Union 1801 officially merged the Kingdom of Ireland with the Kingdom of Great Britain (England, Scotland & Wales) to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. It was not until 1921 that the independent Republic of Ireland was established. Edward is thought to be the son of William and Ann Loughlin and was born in Ireland (see * below). Family oral history recalls the Loughlin family came from County Mayo in Ireland. Edward married Catherine Ryan, likely in Ireland. Exactly where and when is unknown at this time. At the time of Edward's and Catherine's family's emigration, Ireland was under the control of the U.K., thus a possible reason for some documentation and references to England. Although, it is possible that Edward and Catherine relocated to England or Wales for work opportunities. Edward was a miner. The Loughlin family's migration to the United States would have occurred between 1879 and 1882. This determined from the children's birthdates and locations: Annie T. (1872, England), Thomas Joseph (1874, England), William P. (1876, England/Wales), John James (1800, ?England?), Daniel Francis (1882, Dover, NJ, USA), Edward J. (1883, NJ - possibly Dover), Matthew (1888, Pennsylvania). The town of Dover (and the unincorporated town of Mount Pleasant) are located some 31 miles West of New York City. Located in Morris County, New Jersey, the area was the location of many mines and a destination of immigrant labor since the 1700s. It appears the family was in this area of New Jersey for several years before relocating to the mining region of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Edward and Catherine settled in Edwardsville. * There are documented references to Edward's mother, Ann Loughlin, residing in the United States (1893 Wilkes-Barre City Directory; Edward Loughlin obituary 1897; 1900 US Census). Though no information has been found to date on when she left Ireland, nor whether she immigrated with her husband and/or Edward's family. cod: lung trouble Patrilineage: William 28 Mar 2022 Catherine Ryan Loughlin dob: ~ 1847, Ireland dod: between 1887-1897, unknown - likely Edwardsville, Pennsylvania The Act of Union 1801 officially merged the Kingdom of Ireland with the Kingdom of Great Britain (England, Scotland & Wales) to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. It was not until 1921 that the independent Republic of Ireland was established. Catherine, aka Katie, married Edward Loughlin /Laughlin, likely in Ireland. Exactly where and when is unknown at this time. Family oral history recalls the Loughlin family came from County Mayo in Ireland. US Census documents from the Twentieth Century record Edward and Catherine's first four children were born in England. Annie T. (1872), Thomas Joseph (1873), William P. (1876), John James (1879/1880). The exact circumstances and location are unknown currently. It is possible that Edward had relocated for job prospects as a miner. The family came to the United States between 1879 – 1882. Again, US Census records have shown sons, Daniel Francis (1882), and Edward J. were both born in New Jersey – both possibly in Dover, Morris County. Soon after, the family moved to Edwardsville, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Edward continued to provide for the family by working in the mines. Catherine and Edward's seventh child, Matthew was born in 1887. There is no other documentation regarding Catherine. She died at some time between 1887 – 1897. Her children would live with and care for each other in one combination or another for several decades to come. cod: unknown 29 Mar 2022
