John S. Hanel was the son of Frank and Anna Rasch Hanel, both natives of Austria. John Hanel married Freida Zalesky on Nov. 25, 1931. ********************************************************* OBITUARY FROM THE LIBERTY VINDICATOR, May 10, 1981 John S. Hanel DAYTON--John S. Hanel, 70, of Dayton died at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 5 in Methodist Hospital in Houston. He was born in Cameron and had been a resident of the Dayton area 43 years where he was a prominent church and civic leader in the Eastgate Community. He was a farmer, a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, serving as commentator and lecturer of the Knights of Columbus Crosby Lodge No. 3229; K.J.T.; S.P.J.S.T., past president, A.S.C., serving as county chairman for 20 years; and served as secretary-treasurer of the Liberty County Water Control District for 38 years. Hanel is survived by his wife, Mrs. Freida Hanel of Dayton; two sons, Johnny Phillip Hanel and Leroy Edward Hanel, both of Dayton; one daughter, Geneva Parick of Crosby; two sisters, Annie Neuman of Dayton and Rose Hoyt of Cold Springs; and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Sterling Funeral Chapel and at 8 p.m. Thursday with a service presented by the Knights of Columbus. A funeral Mass was celebrated by the Rev. Msgr. Paul Fee at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Anne's Catholic Church in Eastgate. Burial was in the Eastgate Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home of Dayton. Pallbearers were Johnny P. Hanel, Jr., Brian J. Hanel, Donnie Hearod, Edmund Krull, Bobby Krull, Melvin Hracek, Walter Psencik and Douglas Hanel.
