JOHN ESGATE The announcement of the sudden death of John Esgate on Saturday morning, came like a shock to the people of Medina. Few indeed knew that Mr. Esgate had in any wise been sick, and his untimely demise called forth many thoughts and expressions of sorrow and regret. On Friday evening he had taken his stroll up town as was his custom and had remained until dark. A month or more ago he had suffered from a prostrated attack of the grip but from which he completely recovered, and he had again during the last few weeks attended to his duties as Street Commissioner and looked after the cleaning and scraping of the streets. Still he had continued complaining of not feeling well. On Friday night he retired at his usual hour. Noticing his heavy breathing his wife arose about midnight and gave him some medicine. Shortly after she became alarmed by his breathing stopping entirely and he made no response to her calls, and on turning on the light found him in the signs of death. She at once called their daughter and sent for Dr. Jones, who lives only a few doors away, and also several neighbors. On their arrival Mr. Esgate was found to be stiff and cold in death. A post-mortem examination held on Saturday afternoon disclosed the fact that the deceased had been suffering from chronic congestion of the brain and vascular disease to the heart. The funeral services were held from his late home on East Friendship Street, on Sunday afternoon, and were conducted by H. G. Blake Post. G. A. R. There was a large concourse of people present. The remains were placed in the vault at Spring Grove Cemetery. Mr. Esgate has been for a number of years a prominent and well known resident of Medina, who was in the strictest sense honest, upright and respected by all. He has almost been active in public and village affairs. he served as Street Commissioner for a number of years. he was born at Hilgay, County of Norfolk, England, February 3, 1838, and was therefore sixty-three years of age. He came to this country in the fall of 1851 and has lived in Medina ever since. After the breaking out of late war he was one of the first to join the 8th Ohio and was in camp at Cleveland for sometime, and on account of sickness had to return to his home in Medina. He afterward joined the 166th being a member of Company E, and served until the end of the war.
