Bio

Frank J. Beran 85, of Sargent died Monday, Dec. 6, 2010, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, after a brief battle with lymphoma. Frank was born on Dec. 10, 1924, at home in Valley County to Frank E. and Martha (Karty) Beran. Frank was the third of six children born to the family. As a young boy he attended elementary school in the country at District 71. He received his early secondary education at North Loup Public School, and he would stay with his Aunt Lil and Uncle Ig during the week, where he learned his good work ethic by becoming an early riser to help with the chores and milking cows before school. On completion of high school at Ord Public School and after his brothers returned from the war, Frank joined the Army where he served overseas in Japan in the medical field. When he returned, he worked for the Bureau of Reclamation as a surveyor and it was then he met his future bride while he was doing a project in Sargent. Frank and Juanita (Greenstreet) were united in marriage on Aug. 25, 1951. They resided in Ord for the next few years where Frank worked in the family-owned hardware store and Juanita was a teacher. They were overjoyed in 1952 when their daughter, Teresa Sue was born. In 1954, they moved to the Greenstreet ranch west of Sargent where they were blessed with a son, James Francis. Frank's dream of ranching was fulfilled in 1958 when the family purchased the beautiful Beran Ranch, nestled on the Middle Loup River southeast of Sargent, where Frank resided until his death. Frank had a true passion for ranching and a great love of the land and the animals that grazed there. Many knew him for his quality seedstock cowherd made up primarily of Simmental genetics, but he was no stranger to many other breeds of cattle. He was an inspiration to many, as he was a pioneer of new technology when he began to use Artificial Insemination on his cowherd in 1962. He was an independent representative for ABS Global, a genetic company that he was involved with until his retirement in 2007. Frank instilled his work ethic and animal husbandry skills on to his children and grandsons and he enjoyed the time they shared on the family operation. He was very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and especially enjoyed playing ball with them, reading books, playing cards and games, and attending their many events. He was an active member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Nebraska Cattlemens Association, American Simmental Association and Custer County Feeders and Breeders. Frank enjoyed being a part of the Growing Young Senior Citizens and Key Villa fun night. He has received numerous awards throughout the years with ABS Global, showing cattle and for being a supporter of FFA and other youth organizations. Survivors include his wife, Juanita; daughter, Teri Svoboda and friend, Mike Peterson; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Janice Beran; grandchildren, Scott and Jennifer Svoboda, Chris Beran and Jacki Ash, Casey and Molly Beran, Cory Beran and Lisa Herbert; great-grandchildren, Weston Svoboda, Rileigh Beran, Wryder Svoboda, Kaitlyn Beran, Mace Beran, Brennan Beran and another great-grandchild to be born in January; brothers, Dick Beran, Rollie (Marsha) Beran, and Don Beran; sister, Alice Rogers; and a host of friends and relatives. Frank was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law, Vernon and Cecil Beran; one infant brother; brother-in-law, Carson Rogers; sister-in-laws, Kathryn Beran, Pat Beran and Janie Beran.
