From "Wellman Advance",, Wellman, Iowa dated Thursday, March 24, 1904: JAMES MILLER DEAD Passes Away at His Home near Green Valley After A Long Illness. Uncle Jimmie Miller, as he was familiarly called, has passed away. The end, long expected, came last Sunday and his spirit greatfully took its release from its environment of pain and suffering. For a long time, he had been soroly afflicted, being almost blind for a number of years. This winter he endured a siege of typhoid fever which his strong constitution miraculously overcame, but which left his intellect in an enfeebled condition. Since then he has gradually failed until the dissolution came. Mr. Miller was born in Virginia, Jan. 17, 1823, and at the time of his death was aged 81 years, 2 months and 3 days. He moved from Virginia to Illinois, where he was united in marriage with Mary C. Parker, July 4, 1850. Theirs has been a long and congenial married life, covering over fifty-three years. To this union were born fourteen children, five sons and nine daughters. Four daughters have preceded him to the word beyond. In 1854, he moved with his family to Iowa, settling in their present home. Here he united with the M. E. church at Champion Hill, of which he remained a faithful member until death. He always took an active part in church work, striving to attend all the services and take part in them. He cared but little for the pleasures afforded by luxurious living and wordly fame, but tried in a humble way to exemplify the Christian religion in his earthy career. He leaves a wife, five sons, and five daughters to mourn the loss of a husband and father, also many friends and relatives who have been accustomed to see his familiar face throughout their life time. Funeral services were held Money p.m. at 2 o'clock in the Champion Hill church. By special request, they were conducted by W. S. Brown, Uncle Jimmie's near neighbor, friend and class leader. Rev. Millice assisted in the ceremonies. He was then laid to rest beside his children in the Champion Hill cemetery. ------------------- From "Williamsburg Journal", Williamsburg, Iowa County, Iowa dated Thursday, March 30, 1904: Mr. Jas. Miller one Green Valley's oldest settelers died last Sunday morning and was laid to rest in the Champion Hill Cemetery on Monday. Despite the gloomy weather it was one of the largest funerals ever held at Champion Hill; many came from a distance to pay their last respects to one known only for his goodness and uprightness. He leaves a wife and ten children to mourn his loss. ---------------- From "The Muscatine Journal, Muscatine, Iowa dated Tuesday, March 29, 1904: James M. Miller died at his home northwest of Wellman March 20 morning at the advanged age of eighty-one years, two months and three days. He had been a resident of this section since 1854, coming here from Illinois. His married life reached nearly to fifty-four years. He having been married July 4, 1850. He leaves a widow, five sons and five daughters. He served in the Mexican war, the funeral was held at Champion Hill March 21. At his special request his neighbor, friend and class leader, W. S. Brown, conducted the service, assisted by his pastor, Rev. H. C. Millice. ---------------- From "The Muscatine Journal, Muscatine, Iowa dated Tuesday, March 21, 1904: James Miller, one of the old residents near Champion Hill, is not expected to live. He is in his eighty-second year.
